As some of you reading this may know, I’m the person behind a very small and little-known gamedev group that I call Bit Phoenix Software. If you’re really old, you may know it as Watercolor Games. Or maybe you were around when I was still developing ShiftOS. Nonetheless, the point is that I run a very small gamedev team. …That I’m going to get rid of.
Why get rid of it?
The simple fact is I’ve grown up. Personally, I don’t feel the need to pretend I own a company. I’d rather just develop games for fun under my name and be done with it. Since The Peacenet essentially got killed off, and I have no interest in developing a project that large until after college, I don’t see a reason to keep running a dormant website and a virtually inactive community.
Something to be known: bits & Bytes exists.
I know there’ll be at least one person reading this that’ll whine and beg me to archive everything and not delete a damn thing but I don’t care. Truth be told, 99% of all active (and inactive) members on Bit Phoenix Software are more active on bits & Bytes – our sister community. So if you want a place to talk, just talk there. It’s more active, and more fun.
So what’s going to happen?
The first thing that’s going to happen is that The Peacenet and all related projects will be archived and made read-only. I see no reason to get rid of that code as I’m sure there’s someone out there who’ll find a use for it. Not only that, but you’ll never know if maybe that someone will end up being me.
The next thing that’ll happen is that the Twitter will be deactivated and the website will go offline. Once that happens, there’s no going back. The domain name will redirect to this post, so if anyone went to Bit Phoenix expecting something else to show up, hello!
After that, the Discord server for Bit Phoenix Software will be deleted. Any members who still want to communicate with us are highly encouraged to join bits & Bytes.
But wait, what about the games?
I realize that some of you will be worried about The Shiftnet (formerly The Peacenet). Sorry, but I don’t want to work on it anymore. That doesn’t mean I won’t be developing games, though. Hell no, I’m still doing gamedev and I’m writing this in my current Dual Credit course (instead of doing the lab we’re supposed to do, sorry prof…I’ll do it at home). Not only that but I have a few ideas and there’s always Cynical Hamlet.
I’ll be keeping all my code available, but I will be deleting The Shiftnet’s itch.io page. I’ll be using the Bit Phoenix itch.io page as my own personal account for Cynical Hamlet and any other games I make. Not only that, but this website – alkalinethunder.wtf – will shadow that.
So, I guess this is goodbye.
Well, not really. I’ll still be active in bits & Bytes and I’m sure they wouldn’t mind you joining if you’re not already there. I’ll also still be active on this website and on Twitter too. I just don’t want to run Bit Phoenix anymore, and so I won’t.
